Hima das created history after winning the first-ever Gold in 400m for India at the IAAF World U20 in Tampere, Finland on Thursday. Hima Das became the first Indian women athlete to win a global title.
The 18-year-old Das took 51.46 seconds to win the title followed by Andrea Miklos of Romania and USA’s Taylor Manson who claimed bronze and silver respectively.
Hima Das started slowly but jumped up as she neared the finishing line, in the last 100m to win the gold.
“I am very proud to hold the Indian flag on my shoulders. I would like to thank India and my team leader and my coach,” said Hima.
Hima’s coach Nipon Das was confident of her, said that he wasn’t worried when Hima wasn’t among the top three at the final curve “Her race began in the final 80 meters. Her progress just shows how much potential she has. It has been just two years since she first wore spikes.”
PM Narendra Modi, President Ram Nath Kovind, and newsmakers across the country have come forth to congratulate her on her win. Celebrities Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar, Shah Rukh Khan and many others took to social media to express their proud wishes.
India couldn’t have felt more proud of this young lady who lights up the world for all the indians watching her.
